Frisco to host USA Football's first Nations Cup, a preview of Olympic flag football
Flag football makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and North Texas fans will get an early look at it in Frisco this December.
USA Football is bringing its first Nations Cup to Frisco Dec. 10–12. The tournament features men's and women's national teams from the United States, Mexico, Japan and China. Over three days, games will follow the same five-on-five rules planned for the 2028 Summer Olympics, according to Local Profile. NBC Sports reports that organizers plan to hold the Nations Cup every year.
Pool play will be at Dr. Pink Field at the Toyota Soccer Center. The medal games move to Ford Center at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys' world headquarters. NBC Sports reports these will be the first competitive games for the U.S. teams since the World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, in August. At those championships, the U.S. men won their sixth straight world title, and the U.S. women finished second to Canada. As host nation, the U.S. gets automatic spots in both Olympic tournaments. Local Profile reports that Mexico's women's team has also qualified.
"Growing the game around the world is part of USA Football's job as the national governing body," USA Football CEO Scott Hallenbeck said in a statement. He said the event gives top programs, the U.S. teams among them, a chance to sharpen themselves against elite competition before 2028. Dallas Cowboys co-owner and Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Jones said in a statement that the organization is "excited to help welcome the world to Frisco for USA Football's first Nations Cup."
Local Profile also reports that the event will spotlight girls' flag football in Texas, with a high school matchup scheduled before the gold medal games.
