Mavericks center Dereck Lively covers adoption fees at SPCA of Texas on Sunday
Lively is sponsoring $10,000 in adoption fees at the SPCA of Texas' Dallas shelter on Oct. 18, so families can take a new pet home for free.

Anyone hoping to add a dog or cat to their family can do it for free this Sunday in Dallas, and Mavericks center Dereck Lively II is picking up the bill.

Lively is sponsoring $10,000 worth of pet adoption fees at the SPCA of Texas' Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, Mavs Moneyball reported. The shelter sits off Interstate 30 and Hampton Road. While the sponsorship lasts, adopters pay nothing.

The SPCA of Texas lists the event as "Dereck Lively II's Block Party: Free Adoptions in Celebration of National Pit Bull Awareness Month." It runs from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center. You can browse adoptable animals ahead of time on the SPCA of Texas website. The SPCA also matches pets with families at its Dallas shelter, at partner PetSmart stores and at mobile adoption events around North Texas.

Local shelters can use the help. In its coverage, Mavs Moneyball pointed to KERA's report last month that Dallas Animal Services, the city's own shelter, was over capacity again. Higher housing costs and other money pressures may be keeping some people from adopting, the site noted. A day of free adoptions takes away one of those costs.

This isn't Lively's first time giving back off the court. Last season he announced a partnership with the national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, donating for every shot he blocks to help erase medical debt people can't pay.
