A neighbor's Facebook post about empty porches grew into Front Porch Gallery, a neighborhood-wide display of decorated homes in Oak Cliff.

Oak Cliff residents are decorating their yards and porches this Halloween and inviting the whole neighborhood to walk through. The effort started with a Facebook post. Carina Arellano, an Oak Cliff native and founder of Oak Cliff Concepts, saw neighbors complaining that trick-or-treaters had stopped coming to their doors, and she set out to bring that tradition back.

Arellano helped build a digital sign-up platform so neighbors could join, and the result is Front Porch Gallery, a neighborhood-wide outdoor art show of Halloween displays. Paola Gone of Hello Oak Cliff is helping spread the word, showcasing the decorated homes and encouraging visitors to vote for their favorites online. Gone said one display, with creepy clowns and characters from "The Exorcist," stopped her in her tracks.

Not every display is meant to frighten. At Elvie De La Fuente's home, handmade Mexican Catrinas, which she has been designing since January, surround an altar honoring loved ones who have died for Día de los Muertos. Some visitors come to admire the craft, and others come to remember people they have lost. De La Fuente invites guests to take photos until midnight, offering a quiet place for reflection as well as celebration.

The gallery has become a way for neighbors to meet, share the streets, and keep an older custom alive. CBS News Texas reporter Marvin Hurst covered the displays for its North Texas audience. Original reporting by CBS News Texas.
