Richardson Neighbors Keep a Nearly 40-Year National Night Out Tradition Going
Block parties, police visits and a run of national rankings make National Night Out one of Richardson's longest-running neighborhood traditions.

Richardson's 2026 National Night Out was set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. Police officers, city officials and special guests planned to stop by registered neighborhood events all over the city, carrying on a tradition that has brought residents and first responders together for decades.

The Richardson Police Department's Community Relations Unit organizes the city's celebration, which happens every year on the first Tuesday in October. National Night Out is meant to build neighborhood spirit and stronger ties between police and the community. Across the country, it usually means porch lights, block parties, cookouts, visits from local officials and police, safety fairs and youth events.

Richardson has taken part in National Night Out for close to 40 years, and its neighborhoods have done well in the national contest. The National Association of Town Watch ranked Richardson second in the nation in Category 2, for cities of 100,000 to 300,000 people, in its 2025 competition. That made it eight years in a row in the category's top 10 and six years in a row in the top two. In 2025, the department worked with residents and local businesses to put on block parties and park celebrations. Police officers, firefighters, city and state officials, volunteers and special guests, including Miss Texas, all took part.

Local businesses help out too. Associa, a community management company headquartered in Richardson, has a long partnership with the city on the event. Associa CEO John Carona said the night shows "neighbors coming together, building relationships and creating connections with the people who help keep our communities safe."
