Richardson residents will get their first look at the renovated Richardson Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 21, when the City of Richardson holds a grand reopening at 1 p.m. at the building on Arapaho Road. The library closed its temporary branch in October so staff could move the collection and equipment back into the newly renovated facility, and in-person services have been on hold since then while digital resources stayed available.
The celebration is designed for families. Local arts groups will perform, and visitors can take part in arts and crafts and a scavenger hunt. Demonstrations of the equipment in the library's makerspace will also be part of the afternoon. The library plans to unveil two new library card designs during the event.
The renovation was paid for through the 2021 bond program approved by Richardson voters. Once finished, the building's footprint grows from 71,583 square feet to 83,576. Changes include more natural light, a relocated main entrance on the southeast corner with a drop-off lane, expanded youth areas, a large event space, a test kitchen, and the makerspace. A new exterior sculpture is also scheduled to be installed before the reopening.
City Manager Don Magner called the move back "an exciting milestone for our community." The reopening is a major step in the larger Municipal Campus redevelopment, which includes a new City Hall. Some finishing work will continue into 2027.
